Catarina Agatta is a hacker. She can cripple mainframes and crash through firewalls, but that’s not what makes her special. In Cat’s world, people are implanted with technology to recode their DNA, allowing them to change their bodies in any way they want. And Cat happens to be a gene-hacking genius.
That’s no surprise, since Cat’s father is Dr. Lachlan Agatta, a legendary geneticist who may be the last hope for defeating a plague that has brought humanity to the brink of extinction. But during the outbreak, Lachlan was kidnapped by a shadowy organization called Cartaxus, leaving Cat to survive the last two years on her own.
When a Cartaxus soldier, Cole, arrives with news that her father has been killed, Cat’s instincts tell her it’s just another Cartaxus lie. But Cole also brings a message: before Lachlan died, he managed to create a vaccine, and Cole needs Cat’s help to release it and save the human race.
Now Cat must decide who she can trust: The soldier with secrets of his own? The father who made her promise to hide from Cartaxus at all costs? In a world where nature itself can be rewritten, how much can she even trust herself?
My Review: When I was fortunate enough to get a copy of book two of this series for review. I went to of course book outlet to see if they had book one. Lucky for me they did so I snagged it up and finally got around to reading it. I have to say that when a friend told me this book about hacking. I was thinking it was the normal kind with like computers and the internet. Man, was I surprised when I learned it was your body these people were hacking!!
I have to say that for a sci-fi dystopian this one hit it out of the park for me. I dived in not knowing anything as I no longer read the flaps of books. And I didn't put it down until I was done!! If you are looking for something along the lines of a dystopian with a sci-fi twist look no further than this one right here.
This high-tech world is one that although would help me and my oldest daughter and even my mother with things that we have. I do not think that I would want to live there. Having what is called a panel in my arm and tech running throughout my body is just not something that sounds appealing to me. Although I will be reading the prequel and sequel to this title I just don't think that this world would be right for me to live in.
So this one lays heavy on tech as well as a new form of zombie. Which was very exciting to read about. In young adult, we don't really get new takes on things very often and even when we do a lot of times those fail to be very good. So I was very glad that this one gave us both something new and did it in a wonderfully wicked way.
The world building in this one is light in the aspect of the world itself since it is just basically our world. But the building shines when it comes to all the tech that is used. Although I didn't really understand a lot of it the author did a great job talking about it and showing us what each part did and although I don't think I'll be coding any DNA anytime soon I didn't feel like I was lost on anything.
The characters in this one were great I loved following the clues and just not knowing who to trust.
And I have to say that I only slightly figured out one of the twists in this book but I wasn't too sure if I was right until it was revealed so that was a nice twist with this one. Our main character Cat was great she is so strong even when the chips are down and she was totally brave throughout most of the story. I really can't wait to see what we get in book two and how far she comes. The side characters in this once were all pretty good. I think for the most part I would have liked to see more of Dax before we did. Because, for the most part even when we got into the main part of the story up until the end I just kind of felt like he was there but separate. This story is about so many things but at its core its a story of survival and saving the world and what you would give up to do that.
This story made me cry and gasp. It was one totally original story and I do not say that very often. I really need a movie of this one!!
Go Into This One Knowing: Light Romance, Dystopian (zombie illness), 2 Major Twists, Slight Cliffhanger, Totally Original Story
